This website is dedicated to Science Fiction and Fantasy for Teens and Young Adults of Color.
This is a huge project and I'm working away at book reviews and locating more books that feature protagonists of Color. Each book has a short description, synopsis or review and the front cover image as an illustration. That image is also a link for your convenience, taking you to the order page or website for that book. You can find the various editions of the book -- paperback, hard cover, or Kindle -- on the Amazon page.
In addition, I'm trying to include the age or grade range, although sometimes it's an arbitrary number. Honestly, I read many of these books marked Ages 18+ when I was a lot younger than 18 (like 13ish). Only you, the adult in charge of your teen, can determine if a book is or isn't appropriate for your teen.
Note to parents, teachers, and homeschoolers: I've highlighted book titles that are included the Accelerated Reader (AR) program in bright green so if you're looking for AR books for your teen, you can locate them at a glance. For more information on AR and reading levels, you should go directly to the AR BookFinder website at http://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx.
And you know, have you noticed that many Kindle books are available with the Text-to-Speech function? This is an awesome opportunity for teens (and adults) who suffer from reading disorders; they have the option of reading along with the audio or, if their disability is severe, simply listening to the text. This function is available on the Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle (2nd generation), and Kindle DX.
In addition, because some reluctant readers simply will not read a book, I've included a selection of graphic novels and comic books. The titles are marked in blue so you can find them quickly. However, having said that, there are one or two that are also AR books, so the title is bright green followed by Graphic Novel in blue. Not just any graphic novel or comic book is featured on my website, I have very strong feelings about the appropriateness and quality of graphic materials that are marketed to young people today (being an old-school graphic artist myself), so I'm rather picky about these books.
Please feel free to contact me if you have suggestions for more books that you or your teen love! All submissions are welcomed, this website is diverse and it is inclusive. After all, that's what started this project -- the desire to include my Teen of Color in my favorite genre -- the world of fantasy and the future!
And thus this journey begins!
